Hey. Whats up? Wasnt the talent show awesome? I think it was. Everyone was great! I hope everyone had fun, cause i sure did! Were you nervouse when it was your turn to go on? Were you like OMG! My stomach is falling out of my body! Or were you like, whateves, i got this. Tell me! Come on, dont be shy. I wanna know. Its easy. Just click on comments. Type a comment, and hit publish. Graduation

As you all know, we are having a fifth grade graduation. You can wear a pretty dress or nice shirt and pants, so dress like you are going to be on the red carpet  because it is a HOLLYWOOD THEME! Make sure you join us. Your parents and you are invited. No other siblings or family. If one can not attend, another friend or family member will be allowed. THANKS! Join us. And are you going to dress up?

Next week wednesday is our school track meet! I'm sure every one is excited. What events r u doing?

Nonfiction Reading Project

We have been working on our nonfiction reading for a couple days, and we are all doing something with animals or wars or anything really as long as its nonfiction. What are you doing?

John Muir Visit

Yesterday all of the fifth grade went over to John Muir Middle school. Some of the eighth graders took us on a tour of the school.There were tons of cool clubs that you could join, and there might not be very many sports in sixth grade but later there will be more choices. Well the school looks extremely fun and a new experience.

6th grade

Hey everyone!  As you all know we all went to visit John Muir yesterday. What were some of your feelings? Are you excited for 6th grade? If you are, tell, if you're not tell too. Talent Show

Soon the talent show will be here. What are you going to do? Have you started practicing already? If you don't think you are doing anything, you should think about it. And are you excited about the talent show? Also are you a little scared too? I think the talent show is going to be amazing this year because everybody is talented.

Sadoko and the Thousand Paper Cranes

Right now we are reading Sadoko and the Thousand Paper Cranes. It is a VERY good book. What do you think will happen to Sadoko. We are also making paper cranes. Mr. Schmicker is teaching us how to make paper cranes (origami.) Remember to practice cause we are going to be making a lot and  Mr. Schmicker can't show us how to do it all the time so remember to practice!!!!

Skype in Our Classroom

We started out our day talking to someone who live far, far away. Erin Seybold, a former student of mine, is a Fulbright Scholar studying the effects of bacteria on the methane in our air. Using Skype, we could see and hear Erin as she answered questions about her year long adventure in Trompo, Norway. Our students were most respectful and had great questions to ask Erin. We'll visit with her again and report about some some of the facts we've learned about our worm study. The experience of chatting "live" with someone living above the Arctic Circle was most interesting. We learned about the sun, solar flares and the northern lights. What a great way to end our week.

Wormology

Sharing the excitement we get from our study of worms and the benefits of recycling is part of what Wormology is all about. Today we joined with our buddies from Mrs. Albee's room. They came down to our room. In front of them was a tray with a pile a "dirt." We let them dig until they found a bunch of worms. Most were very excited, and some, just like 5th graders, would rather watch the worms then have to touch one.

COLONY FAIR COMING SOON!

Are you excited for the colony fair? Well you'd better be because it's coming fast. I know all the projects will be a success. It's been very busy working on the project. Good luck to everyone.

Wormology

This week our fifth graders will start their study of worms. They will learn how red worms can be used to recycle food waste. Students will take the food waste from our kitchen (only the food that does not reach the students' trays) weigh it each day and find averages. This food will be added to our worm bins for the hungry little guys to eat. The resulting Vermicompost is an excellent additive (natural fertilizer) to your garden. Later on we will harvest the vermicompost and put it 5 pound bags to sell in our garden sale. I am anticipating of a shipment of worms to arrive on Friday.

How To... Presentations

Has everyone done their How To presentations? What did you all do for your presentations? Witch ones did you like better, the ones where you got food, or the ones without? Did you have a favorite presentation?

Dinotopia

We had a great time at the Woodson Art Museum learning about the glass exhibit and of course Dinotopia: The Fantastical Art of James Gurney. We got to draw our own dino-art using water color pencils. I encourage you to visit with your family. The paintings are fantastic and will keep the attention of even your youngest. We talked about an early live action/cartoon animation film made in 1914, Gertie the Dinosaur. The whole film is about 12 minutes long and can be seen online at the link below. The piano accompaniment is similar to what audiences would have heard when they went to the theater to see this "silent film." I hope you get a kick out of seeing where we were almost 100 years ago in our film technology. Remember, in 1914, this film was cutting edge animation.Students let me know what you thought about our visit.

Portfolios

Portfolios, portfolios, dont you luv portfolios? Isnt that an interesting word? So how is everyone doing on their portfolios? Are you having fun creating them? Give me some feedback people!!! 

D.A.R.E. Graduation

D.A.R.E. graduation was awesome. we are all now D.A.R.E. graduates! We all got our own certifacates. There are a couple videos of the kids who read their essays. I'm sure that when i say this, all the fifth graders will agree with me, the best part about graduation was...   CAKE!!!!!!!

Colossal Colonies

In social studies we are learning about colonies. So far we have been focusing on the colony New Spain, and the New England. The spainish wanted all the gold they could get and the english wanted all the furs they could get. Do you remember how the king got people to settle in the new world? And who were the first explorers to explore the mississippi? If you did your homework you should know!

KNITTING

Hey guys and girls!!!!! Today, in knitting, we made 101 hats! It is really amazing! All the hats we've made, goes to Aspirus Hospital. If you have a loom and want to knit, you better hurry on up because we only have one month to go, and if you have any extra looms to lend to the people who would like to knit please bring them to Mrs. Seefeldt or the kids who would like to knit. Please hurry to lend them (if you are going to) to the people that want to knit because we only have ONE MONTH LEFT. Our target is to get over 150 hats. Good luck knitters.

School Forest from your view

The 5th graders went to the school forest. They stayed there for 2 nights and 3 days. It was probably scary away from parents, but we had lots of fun. Were you scared being away from parents? I was scared the first night, but my friends were there for me, they made me feel better so I wasn't scared. Write how you felt when you over at the School Forest.

School Forest

I hope you are hearing great things about our school forest experience. Mrs. Maas and I are so proud of our students. They were outstanding in behavior. They listened well, and asked great questions. The T.A.'s had nothing but good things to say about their cabin mates. Remember, you can respond to the blog about the things you heard from your child or if you were the child at the school forest you can add your thoughts as well. Thank you for raising such wonderful students.

School Forest: Here We Come!

Everyone is excited. I spoke with all the TA's and they sound like a great group and yes they are excited to work with our students. These juniors and seniors take a leadership class that in part prepares them to participate as Teacher Assistants for the 5th and 6th grade School Forest outings. These students take time away from their families, friends and classes, knowing that all work missed must be made up. If this year's group is like those we had in the past, they will go out of their way to make your child feel comfortable add to the fun of this wonderful learning experience. The TA's often foster a special bond with the students assigned to their cabin. This bond often pulls the TA's back to Rib Mountain to check in on our young graduates. Do not be surprised if your child wants you to meet their TA when you pick them up on Wednesday.
